Shahada of Faith: The First Pillar of Islam

As salaamu alaikum brothers and sisters, Muslims and Non-Muslims alike.  Tonight’s post will be about the first of five Islamic Pillars.  I wish you all only good things, and hope that this topic explain one of the main beliefs in Islam.

Shahada” is literally the Islamic testimony of faith (imaan), and is the first of the five pillars of Islam.

To make Shahada means two important oaths are made – especially when reverting to Islam, announcing that he/she:

1)  Bear witness that absolutely NOTHING deserves to be worshipped but ALLAH/GOD ALMIGHTY.  …and…

2)  Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the prophet of Allah/God almighty.

One must understand the full meaning before making the proclamation, and must be recited at least once in a Muslim’s life.  Once understood and said, it brings into the heart and mind of one who submits to one God almighty a high level of respect, shame, and love for God almighty and all of his creation.  Keeping this shahada as a whole of or your iman (faith), mind and heart keep a muslims (literally meaning:  one who surrenders him/herself to God almighty) aware of what [good] deeds must be done – to fear ‘the life in this world’ (dunya), God willing (inshaAllah) receive rewards from God almighty in Heaven (Jannah).

In the Qur’an (before reading please say: I seek refuge with Allah/God almighty from satan the accursed.  In the name of God, the most beneficient, the most merciful; authu billahi mina shaytan il-rageem.  Bismillah ilrahman ilraheem.)

Sura (Chapter): Al-Hadid (The Iron)  57:20

“Know that this world’s life is only sport and play and  gaiety and boasting among yourselves and a vying in the multiplication of  wealth and children. It is as rain, whose causing the vegetation to grow  pleases the husbandmen, then it withers away so that thou seest it turning  yellow, then it becomes chaff. And in the Hereafter is a severe chastisement,  and (also) forgiveness from Allah and (His) pleasure. And this world’s life is  naught but a source of vanity.  Amen.”

Arabic:  lAAlamoo annama alhayatu alddunya laAAibun
walahwun wazeenatun watafakhurun baynakum watakathurun fee
alamwali waalawladi kamathali ghaythin aAAjaba alkuffara nabatuhu
thumma yaheeju fatarahu musfarran thumma yakoonu hutaman wafee
alakhirati AAathabun shadeedun wamaghfiratun mina Allahi waridwanun
wama alhayatu alddunya illa mataAAu alghuroori.

Allah/God almighty warns us, and he is all knowing.  With the understanding of the shahada, comes the responsibility of performing the duties Allah/God almighty commands us:  1) keeping Shahada (testimony) of faith, 2)  performing salah or prayer, 3)  giving zakat or alms, 4)  performing sawm or fasting, and 5)  attending hajj or pilgrimage.

Keeping the faith or iman also means following the Commandments Allah/God almighty gave to the Prophet Musa/Moses…YES…Muslims follow the Ten Commandments, because it is included in the Holy Qur’an – it has chapters on it, subhanAllah!

Al-Fatiha: The Opening

As salaamu alaikum, Muslim and Non-Muslims alike.  I only wish you good tidings and blessings from Allah/God almighty.

The following are texts from the Qur’an, specifically the first Chapter “The Opening” or Surat Al-Fatiha.

(“Authu billahi mina shaitan ilrajeem..” this transliterates to: “I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed satan.”  This is a pre-prayer blessing before any Chapter from the Quran, so that the shaytan will not lead you to haraam or bad deeds toward or against the Quranic teachings.)

“Bismillāhi r-rahmāni r-rahīm
Al hamdu lillāhi rabbi l-‘ālamīn
Ar rahmāni r-rahīm
Māliki yawmi d-dīn
Iyyāka na’budu wa iyyāka nasta’īn
Ihdinā sirāt al-mustaqīm
Sirāt al-ladīna an’amta ‘alayhim ġayril maġthūbi ‘alayhim walā althāllīn.”

English Transliteration:

“In the name of Allah (God) the most beneficent the most merciful
All praise is due to Allah (God)
The most benificent the most merciful
The lord of the day of Judgement
Thee alone we worship thee alone we seek for help
Guide us to the right path The path of those upon whom thou has bestowed favors. Not of those who thou has cursed once not of those whom have gone astray.”

I hope this chapter (surat) opened up your heart and mind toward possibly reading more about Islam.

Thank you for taking the time to read!

Wa as salaamu alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatu!
